“We’re sorry, and we won’t do it again,” that was the official statement from the food chain formerly known as White Castle. “We didn’t know the harm that we were causing, and once we knew, we didn’t want to acknowledge the pain. That was our fault, and we are deeply sorry.” The brand went on to announce that they would be immediately changing their name.
“We know that words are not enough, but we’re committed to doing the work, and that’s why we’re officially announcing a name change from White Castle (we’re sorry!) to Non-White Autonomous Zone. Hopefully, this shift will be the first step in a dialog and reconciliation with our community. Black Lives Matter. They have always mattered, and we should have aknowledged that earlier.”
For many activists, the re-branding is a welcome change. “It’s about f*cking time,” said an anonymous account on Twitter which is no doubt highly representative of public opinion as a whole. “Guess I won’t burn this b*tch to the ground after all.”
